The artworks condense a transformation that takes place in nature over a long, barely comprehensible period of time, unnoticed as it were, producing fascinating rock formations, the so-called Tafoni. The driving force behind this change is a gentle but consistent matter that is the origin of life: water. The sculptures interpret this invisible process of formation and oscillate between two states, generating a dynamic dialogue between them: On the one hand, the hard, angular, solid and moulded sandstone and on the other hand the soft, flowing, transparent and formless medium of water.
The sculptures recall the bedding of the sandstone via horizontal additive manufacturing layers, which are an essential part of the sculptural expression and visualize the timelines of the transformation.
They act as a measure of gradual change and are both visually and haptically perceptible. In contrast to the natural process of successive hollowing out of the rock, which can be understood as subtraction, the artefacts are made by a digitally driven, additive manufacturing process. This dichotomy between the natural and the artificial is further emphasised by the application of computational design in the form finding, as well as in the choice of materialisation using recycled plastic.
